Emergency Paediatric First Aid
A 1 day course covering essential CPR and first aid skills relating to infants and children.
Description
First Aid needs of children, varies, from those of adults. This course is for anyone over the age of 16 that comes into contact with or works with, infants and children. This one-day course covers the basic skills of CPR and First Aid related to children and infants. On completion, candidates obtain a RLSS UK Qualifications Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid, which is valid for 3 years.
The Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification is endorsed by CIMSPA which means that training has been quality assured by CIMSPA and is delivered by a CIMSPA education partner. It is also in line with the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum (FAAOF).
Prerequisites
Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years old at the time of taking the assessment and attend 100% of the course. No prior first aid knowledge is required. Employers should consider the following when selecting individuals to attend this training:
- Reliability, disposition and communication skills
- Aptitude and ability to absorb new knowledge and learn new skills
- Ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures
- Normal duties are such that they may be left to go immediately and rapidly to an emergency
Course Content
This one day course covers a range of CPR and first aid skills relating to infants and children, including:
- Understanding the role of the paediatric first aider
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
- How to assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding
Assessment
The course comprises practical work and theoretical classroom work, as well as a practical assessment on CPR and first aid. Candidates must attend 100% of the course and successfully pass all assessment criteria. To re-qualify, candidates must complete the training and assessment again.
Validity & Renewal
The RLSS UK Qualifications Level 3 Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) is valid for 3 years. In order to re-qualify learners must be assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria in the unit. For EPFA this will be the same as the initial course of 6 hours.

Please be aware that attending a First Aid course does not guarantee you a qualification; this will be dependant on the performance and the abilities of the candidate during the final theory and practical assessments.
